Eco-Friendly Winter Wedding Details

If you are planning a winter wedding, there are so many themes you can choose from to highlight the holiday spirit including snowflakes, pinecones, and evergreen trees. If you want to embrace the season while keeping the environment in mind there are hundreds of eco-friendly winter wedding details to choose from in this genre.  From invitations to favors, here are some of our favorite green winter wedding ideas for 2015:

Eco-Friendly Winter Wedding Invitations

Snow is as lucky as rain on your wedding day, and much more fun! Set the tone for your winter event with an eco-friendly invitation featuring large snowflakes or soft snowfall in whites and cool winter blues. There are a number of companies printing on recycled papers with soy inks. You can also find recycled paper all-in-one invitations that act as their own envelopes and rsvp cards, which saves additional paper.

Wood works well for winter wedding invitations too, as it has a hearty feel and can be laser engraved with pine trees and other wintery designs. Unique Custom Products offers a nice selection of FSC-certified sustainable wood wedding invitation and save-the-date choices.

Sustainable Winter Wedding Flowers

Not all flowers fare well in winter, and most have to be shipped in from overseas – adding to the carbon footprint of your wedding event. If you want to go local, consider potted plant centerpiecessucculent wedding crowns (which do well in the cold and can be replanted), and bouquets made from dried floral elements like pine cones and branches.

Flowers made from organic cotton or eco-friendly felt flowers also work well for winter weddings and can be reused or resold after the big day.

Organic Winter Wedding Desserts

From your cake to cookie wedding favors, dessert is a great place to add a dash of winter detailing. Work with your baker or caterer to see what simple substitutions are possible. It is easy to find organic flour, sugar, eggs and milk – so greening almost any dessert recipe is a cinch with a little pre-planning. Add sprigs of winter greens and pine cones for decoration.

Snow-inspired natural lollipops also make awesome sweet treats – and can double as eco-friendly wedding favors!  These Snowball Lollipops are vanilla honey flavored with a vanilla sugar coating, reminiscent of a snowy blizzard day.

4 DIY Hot Organic Drinks to Warm Your Winter Wedding

Nothing warms up a winter wedding reception like some delicious hot alcoholic drinks for your guests. For eco-conscious couples, creating organic drinks is easy, as there are natural, Fair Trade and organic substitutions for almost all of the components your bartenders will need. Creating a signature organic hot drink is also a great DIY project if you are hosting a small reception the night before your wedding. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Organic Hot Rum Cider

For fall or winter weddings, it is easy to find gallons of local, organic cider in most parts of the country and spicing it up is a cinch. All you need is organic spiced rum, some sliced organic apples for garnish and cinnamon. Add alcohol to cider in a 1/2 ratio (1oz of rum for every 2oz of cider) and spice to taste. This simple recipe is delicious and can be made ahead of time or on the fly as your guests drink it down.

Organic Gingerbread Toddy

This recipe from Prairie Organic Spirits is perfect for gin lovers and offers a great play on words – “gin”gerbread.” You can make your own syrup in bulk and use it for your drinks and/or and bottle it and give small syrup bottles out with the drink recipe as a wedding favor for your guests to enjoy at home.

For the gingerbread syrup you will need to scale this recipe:

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a pan. Heat to boiling while whisking until all the powder substances dissolve. Boil for 2-3 minutes so syrup thickens.

For the drink you will need:

  • 2 parts Prairie Organic Gin
  • 1 part gingerbread syrup (made above)
  • 1 part lemon or orange juice
  • ¼ cup boiling water

Directions: Fill cup with hot water and stir until gingerbread syrup is dissolved. Garnish with an organic cinnamon stick.

Organic Spiked Chai

If you love the taste of chai lattes, you’ll delight in this grownup version. For a simple recipe that tastes a lot like the Starbucks’ one, blend Organic Oregon Chai with organic milk and spiced rum. For a more gourmet take, you can follow this recipe from eatnorth.ca.

You will need to scale these ingredients up to meet your party size needs:

Directions: Place the first 4 ingredients in a medium pot over medium-high heat, and heat to just before a simmer (steam starting to come off the surface). Reduce heat to low, add remaining spices and aromatics, and steep for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Ladle into mugs and garnish with ground cinnamon.
